Plan and Price of iPhone - expensive in Malaysia?

Author: orpheo // Category: , , ,

Many iphone lover keep complaining that price in malaysia is ridiculous. Of course me in of them. the price that offer in US is $199 (RM690++) compare to maxis offer RM2400++ make a lot of people find others smart phone in market. the question is, are maxis really charge alot of money to their costumer? i think that is true untill i found a comment from this site.

"The reason why the iphone is selling for $99(3g), $199 and $299 is because you’ll have to sign a 2 years contract with AT&T. If you get the iphone, you have to sign up for a iphone data plan no matter if you use it or not. The minimum you pay a month for the voice and data is $100 and that’s excluding many other features and they do not offer unlimited data. Every new phones purchase in the US with all the cheap price you see, you have to sign a 2 years contract, no matter which carrier you use. It’s not like m’sia where you just buy a phone and use with whatever carrier you wish. The carriers in the US subsidize the price of the phone so that it’s affordable and then lock you in a 2 years contract and make the money on the plan for the 2 years you are with them. If you want to change your phone before the contract end, you’ll have to pay full price for the new phone that you want which is most of the time more expensive than what they sell in asia. If you want to get out of the contract early, you’ll have to pay around $250 for the early termination fee, not like malaysia where you can use maxis one day and change to celcom the next. Plus all the phone in the US are locked to the carrier. If you are buying just the phone without any contract, you’ll be paying around $700 (RM2450) which is about RM100 cheaper than if you buy from maxis without contract, and the phone will be locked to AT&T while the one from maxis is unlocked. When i compare maxis and AT&T plan, maxis is still cheaper. On a 2 years with maxis, you get the phone free and pay RM375/mth with 2500 mins while for AT&T, you pay $100/mth with 900 mins, so call unlimited data which is limited to 5GB and still have to pay $99 ( it was $199 before) for the phone. If you compare apple to apple, AT&T is the big ripoff here, not maxis. (All price stated are in USD unless it states RM)"

If you like to read all about this discussion, please directly to http://ninezerothree.wordpress.com/2009/06/11/maxis-iphone-3gs-for-malaysia-pwns-u-s-for-now/

Now, you see the point and you decide whether the price of iphone in malaysia is really killing your pocket or not.

for me, it till now, it slightly fair.

congrate to maxis for bringging the iphone to malaysia officially. You can buy iphone at loyat for price rm2000++ jailbroken and no apple warranty.

honestly, i hoping not only maxis become a dealer in Malaysia. i hope one day Celcom and Digi or other telco will come out iphone with better plan rate.
Competitor make better rite?

For now, just enjoy your iphone, (if you have one) . there about 50,000 application on stores and keep counting. the best is, the apps is even free. i dont think other smart phone as much as apple app.

For your info, Maxis will lose the exclusivity in Malaysia next year (2010). Apple is not happy with the way Maxis is handling the iPhone 3GS in Malaysia. The staff is also damn lousy with their service, especially those at Danga Bay, Johor! Tidak apa attitude.

My source said that Celcom would also take a share of the iPhone pie in 2010. Shall wait and see.

I will never use Maxis service for two reasons, their poor service and Maxis's boss political cronyism.

That make me wonder why maxis got the exclusive dealer. N y not celcom? Are they not concern enough for iPhone fever in world market? Celcom staff need to answer here
